Our latest Preservation & Conservation grants – March 2024

At our March Trustee meeting, we were delighted to award 13 grants coming to a total of £266,500 from our Preservation and Conservation programme. Below we share a little about each grant and its purpose.

Our Big Picture is a social enterprise that delivers community arts activities in Grimsby. Our grant of £25,000 will help the development of a community-focused arts and heritage hub in a row of historic cottages in the centre of town.

A grant of £20,000 for The Chapter at Wells Cathedral will help support the wider conservation and repair work of the medieval Vicars’ Close situated within the precinct of the cathedral. Built between 1348 and 1430 to house the Vicars Choral of Wells Cathedral it is the most complete medieval close in Europe still used for its original purpose.

The Thomas Doran Parkanaur Trust, Co Tyrone, Northern Ireland, provides a a range of educational courses, life skills training and social recreational activities to students aged 18 years and over with intellectual, physical and / or sensory disabilities. The Trust is based within a Class A listed large Tudor Revival Manor. Our grant of £20,000 will go towards viability work to develop the historic courtyard buildings and Gate Lodge as accommodation.

SPID Theatre Company (Social Progressive Interconnected Diverse) champions the heritage of estates through art that advocates housing justice. Based in the Community Rooms at the Grade II* listed modernist Kensal House estate, our grant of £10,000 will be used to restore the reinstatement of the original steps and serving hatch.

Cullercoats Watch House in North Shields, Tyne and Wear is a volunteer led charity set up to restore and preserve the Watch House, conserve its heritage and create a community venue/heritage hub for all. Our grant of £25,000 will help towards the repair of the historic fabric.

Salisbury Cathedral is one of Britain’s finest medieval cathedrals. Our grant of £20,000 will help to conserve a beautiful stained-glass window, dating back from 1879, designed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris. The work will also provide an opportunity for specialist skills to be passed on to an apprentice glazier.

Cloughey Heritage Group was set up to prevent a former local church, in Cloughey seaside village, Co. Down, Northern Ireland, falling into a state of dilapidation. Our grant of £20,000 will help support the work of the conservation architect to put the charity in a better position to apply for capital funding. Ultimately, the aim is to create a community hub, reduce rural isolation and attract more visitors and tourists to the area.

Aberdeenshire Council has been granted £6,500 towards the repair and rebirth of St.Brandan’s church and graveyard, Inverboyndie. Dating back to at least the early 13th Century our grant will help support the wider restoration work to make the site safe, saving it for generations to enjoy.  

Paignton Picture House Trust was set up to restore this rare, intact, early cinema, dating back to 1914. The ambition is to transform it into a cultural and community hub. Our grant of £30,000 will support the conservation work to the at-risk plaster cornice which requires specialist conservation skills.

Leanchoil Trust was set up to save Leanchoil Cottage Hospital and to meet the community’s wish to re-purpose it for health, wellbeing and veteran support.  A grant of £15,000 will go towards the development officer post who will be employed to secure further funding.

Foundation for Jewish Heritage has been awarded £10,000 for a condition survey of Middle Street Synagogue, Brighton. The aim is to repurpose the grade II*listed building, which dates back to 1875, bringing it back into regular use to serve the wider population of Brighton and the South Coast.

Norfolk Mills and Pumps Trust plans to restore Turf Fen Mill built c.1875. It is one of three historic windmills on the How Hill Estate in the Norfolk Broads. Our grant of £25,000 will go towards the wider conservation work to secure the future of this historic mill which is currently on the ‘at risk’ register.

The Landmark Trust exists to save extraordinary historic places in jeopardy. Mavisbank, Midlothian, Scotland, is a building of outstanding importance to Scottish and British national heritage dating back to 1723-27. It is at immediate risk of irretrievable loss. Our grant of £40,000 will help fund essential surveys needed for phase one, while further fundraising efforts continue.
